Alaska Ship & Drydock

Facilities Capabilities

ASD has available highly skilled individuals in all trades related to ship repair, new ship construction and heavy fabrication.

ASD Machinery
Pier Face
There is 1100 Feet of deepwater moorage (35 feet at MLLW) with all of the available services as listed above on Dry Dock #1. Other moorage is available at the ASD facility with some limitations to vessel draft and available services.

ASD ElectricalASD ElectricalElectrical and Electronics
ASD’s electrical department is equipped to accomplish virtually any task related to electrical installations. Historically, the electrical department has accomplished projects ranging from minor lighting and distribution modifications to full system installations. These systems include; internal and external communications, navigation, machinery alarm and monitoring (both digital and analog), control and indication (e.g. tank level and watertight openings), systems integration (e.g. HVAC and ballast transfer), motor control centers, and full replacement of ships service switchboards and sub-level distribution panels.

ASD MachineryASD ElectricalMachinery
The machinery department includes the inside machinists and mechanics. The inside machinists accomplish the machining required to support ship repair and service many of Ketchikan’s machine shop needs. These machining capabilities include; lathe work, shaft build up and repair, hub repairs, keyways, boring and facing of small and large items, milling, parts fabrication and duplication, etc. The mechanics support the shop's machinery needs including; shafting and bearing alignments and installations, reduction gear and clutch rebuilds, pneumatic and hydraulic control systems, pump rebuild and installations, etc.
ASD RiggingASD ElectricalRigging and Services
The rigging and services department exists primarily to support the needs of the other crafts to facilitate ship repair. These duties include; block and cradle construction for vessel haul-outs (both dry dock and marine ways), rigging and crane operations, heavy lifts and transfers (industrial moving), fuel and ballast transfers, tank cleaning, confined space entry and rescue, shipyard competent persons, hazmat removal and mitigation, installation and maintenance of lifesaving appliances, fire prevention, and general jobsite cleanliness.

Coatings
The coatings department accomplishes all items related to preservation of vessels and structures. They are experienced in the surface preparation and applications of virtually any paint system, including many systems that are considered somewhat exotic and require factory certification. The coatings department is also responsible for deck coverings, fiberglass coatings and repairs, and tank coatings and linings.

ASD RiggingASD Pipe & SteelSteel and Pipe
The pipe and steel departments at ASD are one of the most diverse and capable departments. Many of the individuals within the departments cross over from structural to pipe according to the resource needs of the projects. ASD has welders certified for the following alloys; mild steel, high tensile steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and CuNi. These welders are certified under programs administered by the following agencies; AWS, API, ASME, ABS, DNV and USCG.

Machine Shop
ASD’s machine shop has significant capabilities and is likely one of the best equipped machine shops in the State of Alaska. In terms of lathe capacities, ASD has the capability to machine shafting to 55 feet in length and can turn items up to 36” in diameter. The shop is equipped with numerous milling machines with table capacities up to 72” x 102”, with 80” of vertical travel. Other, more specialized machining centers are available at ASD as well.

ASD Wood ShopASD ElectricalSpecialty Shops
In addition to the machine shop, the ASD facility contains numerous specialty shops related to the various shipyard crafts, such as; electrical and electronics, carpentry/joinery, hydraulics and valve repair, piping and mechanical, and rigging. In electrical, ASD has accomplished projects ranging from small lighting and distribution projects to complete refits of ships service switchboards; installation of new integrated machinery and alarm systems and communications and navigation systems. ASD’s carpentry/joinery shop is well equipped with the necessary equipment to accomplish projects from major elements of wood construction to millwork. The ASD mechanical department is fully capable in way of fabrication and installation of piping and associated components, fabrication and installation of HVAC ducting, and major hydraulic systems installations. Due to the nature of ASD’s work shipboard, the rigging department is very capable. Virtually all of the materials and components installed aboard ships must be placed aboard with cranes and/or lift trucks; therefore the rigging department is well equipped and always ready.
